can i let the trees do the talking,
can i let the ground do the walking? Delaney wasn't very fond of people or things she didn't know so well. It was trust issues, but it wasn't like she'd had some life-altering thing to damage her trust. Maybe it was just a pathological fear. The other night (when she couldn't sleep, of course) she pulled out a pocket-sized dictionary her dad has sent her (because, being a writer, he thought that was more important than sending his daughter, ya'know, an actual letter), and went through all the words that started with "x"'s and "z"'s. Because... it was entertaining? Well, it helped her get to sleep, but not before she found the word xenophobia; an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange. And she guessed that's what she had, an unreasonable fear of strange things and people. Places didn't bother her so much, because there was always something familiar about the feel of a place, the nature and energy that she could feel pulsing in it that quieted her mind. But people were a different story.
Delaney loved the forest. Trees were easy to be around, they asked no questions. Sure, it was kind of draining to be around them, but it always was to be anywhere. What she hadn't expected about camp was all the, well, nature. When you phrased it that way, it made her seem pretty silly, but it was the truth. Even when she lived in the woods in Utah, she'd still been pretty close to the city, and it watered down her powers a little, making her a little bit less aware. But here, so far from the chaos and rioting and upset in the world, it was so acute, the way that everything rained down on her. And the nature and animals took her energy without even meaning. The weird mix of her father's nature skills, and her mothers angelic attributes kind of made her this sacrifice to the natural world, the unspoiled parts. The modern and mundane side wanted nothing from her, even though people were naturally drawn to her. Her powers ran all the time, and she couldn't turn them off. So constantly, energy was just being drained from her. Pair that with a bout of insomnia, and you're bound to be a little sleepy.
So she walked around the forest of the camp. She might have been getting deep, but if she was, she wasn't aware. It was later in the afternoon, and through the filter of the forest she could still feel the blister of the sun on her skin, but it wasn't that bad, really. It was a comforting warmth, like the touch of a friend. It made her pretty content. So she just kind of kept walking through the forest, but not necessarily walking like a normal person. Most people didn't have the guts to venture this far into it (Dell only did for two reasons: she didn't really notice how far she was going, and her intuition told her she could trust the gentle cradle of the woods), so she kind of danced around, twirling and smiling to herself, almost confident with the fact that she was alone. It was freeing, when she got far enough from people, it loosened her up and reminded her of then she was younger, and would spend hours in the forests behind her house. It was familiar.

I'm selfish as selfish comes , you're giving me a run for my money . benji knew very well of the punishments for smoking drugs on campus, and he was well aware of the ramifications for smoking normal cigarettes on campus too. nevertheless, he was making his way deep into the forest to spark up a fag and smoke because, quite frankly, he was bored. yes, benj was bored. despite having a number of friends he could've socialised with and plenty of tail to be had, he wasn't in the mood and all he wanted to do was smoke in peace. glancing to his sides he trudged through the forest, eagerly pulling a cigarette out of his pocket and pushing it between tight lips, lifting his lighter to it and lighting up as he almost jogged through the forest. grinning he took a long drag, breathing in deeply and feeling the effects of the nicotine taking over his body, his tenseness immediately fleeing from every pore of his body. blowing the smoke in rings, he walked confidently through the forest, no regard for the horrific things that could be lurking. it was late afternoon and soon the sun would being going to bed, dwindling against the horizon. he wanted to be quick – just have a smoke ad get out before a guard or a guide or some other tosser came along to find him, to tell him off and send him to bed. he loved camp, but he was getting a little sick of the authority, much like he did every year. he loved it until he realised he was still subject to rules. then it all went to pot, quite literally. he didn't smoke a lot of pot, just enough to get him a little light headed every now and then.. or a considerable amount at a party back home. what could he say? he liked how he felt and it made him happy.
laughing loudly to himself he took enough drag and slowed his pace down, now ambling contently through the tall trees, the crack of twigs under his feet as he went. kicking up the leaves and fallen tree parts, he puffed on his cigarette and blew the smoke back into the air, leaving a trail of smoke behind him as he went. by this point he was pretty deep in the forest, and the silence was a little uncomfortable for him. he liked peace and quiet, but silence? not his thing, he preferred the noise to be so loud it was hard to hear what each individual thing was, but at that point it was the opposite. scowling he wandered, something catching his eye. quickly he turned on his heel and looked out to see a young female, tossing herself around and dancing. her hair twirled behind her as she moved so fluidly, her body bending and flexible. benji smirked, a cocky smile across his lips as he watched her silently. taking a last drag of his cigarette, he cleared a patch on the floor with his toe and dropped the cigarette, screwing it deep into the dirt to make sure it was out. he might have been a naiad, but he had a serious appreciation for nature, just more so for the water. he wasn't about to start a forest fire with his own god damn stupidity now, was he? blowing the smoke out of the corner of his mouth, he rested himself against a tree and folded his arms, watching her with a grin.
"you're quite the dancer", he grinned, his grin changing from so mischievous to a charming smile. running a hand through his messy hair, he wandered over and closer towards the female, his hands now resting comfortably at his sides since he had had a cigarette. stopping a foot from the girl he offered out a hand towards her, "I'm benji..and who're you, miss dancer girl?", he asked, arching an eyebrow and cocking his head to one side as he looked at her, smile upon his lips. yes, his boredom seemed to have found it's self something to tangle with, possibly in more than one sense – he would have to see about that, but judging by the rack he had seen briefly earlier when she'd been dancing, he certainly hoped so.

oil that tastes like blood,
stole the summer's scent She had quieted down a considerable amount at this point. Something was off. She tilted her head ever so slightly, listening for noise, listening for something. She was so in tune with the forest, sometime sit scared her. She wondered if her father had been more than half gifted, if he had some nymph in him too, because she wasn't sure if this intensity of natural powers could come just from a genetic disability. But something had changed in the atmosphere, be it ever so slightly. Delaney still had trouble comprehending the imenseness of the camp; she wasn't like most kids here, who had spent endless summers playing in the woods and lakes. No, her daddy had shipped her off full time as soon as things got dangerous, and here she stayed. She only held such a heavy hand in the hybrid world because she tended to have a leveled head, and most people liked her very much. And being half-angel didn't really hurt her chances, either. It seems the beings had a pretty special standing.
So, here was the girl, standing stiff- still as she waited to see what was coming. Somewhere distant she smelled smoke, and wrinkled her nose ever so slightly in distaste. A guy walked from the hiding of the trees, and she tensed almost instantly as he stood, looking quite bored, watching her. Some other times, when Delaney questioned her skin even more, she wondered if she was a shifter; she was so feral, she was so wild. She was like an untamed horse when it came to people; just the scent of someone new set her reeling. This was not familiar, and that was not good. But somehow, somehow she never really knew how somehow worked, she ended up being fluid as he walked closer. Somehow, she willed herself to stand. She liked the way his voice sounded. She could feel the water elements in his body; a naiad, like Ash. That relaxed her a bit more. She always trusted the more natural creatures more. Nymphs and shifters were her first choice any day, because they were connected to the natural world. In her opinion, things like vampires and witches were very far from natural, and not right, and they only irritated her more.
Dell found herself smiling at this boy across from her. She put her own hands on her hips. She doubted the way he looked at her, but despite herself she wanted to trust him. That's why Delaney always found herself confused with, well, herself. By instinct, she was not a trusting creature; her dad had more or less raised her as a hermit. But the angelic side, her mother, made her want to trust everything, made her want to find the good in anything. So she was endlessly battling herself. But right now, she found the hermit side loosing, even if ever so slightly. ' Delaney. ' She smirked a little at her name. Her answer was so short, and prompt, it kind of made her ill at ease. She never really had much to say, she wasn't a girl of sly comments and witty remarks. She reached out and shook his hand, trying not to dwell on any of her bad thoughts about this kid. ' And you, ' She paused, a look of fauz frustrating forming on her face as she pretended to concentrate, her poor form of a joke. ' ...are a naiad? Am I right? ' She smiled widely, plump lips separating to show a row of perfect white teeth. Another thing from her mother; inherent beauty that wasn't always wanted.

lets get down and freaky baby , lets get restless baby come on get crazy with me . he couldn't understand why, on seeing him, she had stopped like a deer in headlights and blinked at him. she was visibly tense, the way her fluid movements suddenly became so robotic, holding herself up on stiff limbs as benji eyed her carefully. he felt as if he was intruding, but it didn't show on his face or in his body language. no, he was confidant, and it read all over his smug, smiley face. as she spoke, his smile melted into a charming smirk, a hand running up the back of his neck as he scratched it gently. "wow, that's a beautiful name.. I guess it had to match your looks", he shrugged with a smile, as if he gave complements out like that every day. no, he only complimented girls he was going to enjoy a little bed time with, and it was rarely sincere, though he had to admit she was one of the more attractive girls around – but the light she seemed to radiate told him one thing: angel. and he wasn't even slightly surprised. taking her hand he lifted it his lips and gently kissed it, looking up at her, "it's a pleasure you meet you, Delaney", adding her name so that he would remember it. his memory wasn't fantastic, but names he usually had a handle on – much more so than faces; he couldn't remember what people looked like two weeks after not seeing them, but he'd remember their name for the rest of his life, despite never seeing them again or ever actually been that bothered about their life whatsoever.
as a look of utter concentration formed on her face, he laughed lightly, taking his hands back to rest them in the loop holes of his jeans, looking into her eyes as she continued to look thoroughly bewildered. her voice trailed off and he arched an eyebrow, waiting for her to fill in the gap. with a small laugh he nodded slowly, running a hand through his hair as he shrugged his broad shoulders. "that obvious am i? jesus, and here I was thinking I was mystery man", he smirked, chewing the inside of his cheek unconsciously. as the smile burst onto her face he couldn’t help but smile back. her happiness was infectious, as if the light she emitted jumped from person to person and cheered them up. he didn't like it one bit – he liked being control and around this female he wasn't.. it didn't feel right. "and you..", he started, taking the chance to look her up and down quite obviously, a thoughtful look contracting his eyebrows as he pursed his lips. "are an angel? or at least a bit.. no girl that gorgeous isn't a bit angel", he smiled, standing at his full height and letting his face smooth back out to a grin. he knew very well he was right – angels were easy to spot, it was like trying to spot a werewolf during a full moon; if you couldn't do it, you were a fucking egit, and that was something that benji certainly wasn't. besides, even if he was, his pride and arrogance wouldn't have let him let on to it anyhow.
the smile still on his lips, benj continued to speak, "so, what's a girl like you doing this deep in the forest and dancing on your own?", he asked, a little genuinely confused at the statement. it was true, he had no idea what it was she thought she was doing prancing about like a faerie, but he wasn't about to seriously question whatever answer she gave him. no, he'd accept it like a gentleman and continue trying to persuade her that he wasn't a total dickhead. "I mean, plenty of people would dance with you.. and it's not exactly the smartest place for anyone, let alone a slender girl like yourself", he told her, his voice ringing with wisdom. he sounded like an information guide, trying to protect the young and feeble from all the nasty creatures that were out there. no. he wanted in her knickers. though he was very informative.

he's just a wolf in disguise,
but i can't stop staring at those evil eyes He kissed her hand, and Delaney felt like squirming under his lips. She wasn't very fond of it. Some girls would have fallen instantly for the touch of it, but not Delaney. Then again, she was most certainly not like the other girls. She really didn't pay most of them much time, so it kind of just left her personality and behavior isolated from everyone else.
' Mysterious? Naw, at this point, nothing's too mysterious for me. ' Except, she was sort of lying. Because she was pretty innocent when it came to people. She didn't know if she wanted to trust Benji yet, but she couldn't tell if the reaction was because she was rebelling against the part of her that was naturally inclined to trust everyone, or if it was something more. So she just kind of pushed it to the back of her mind for further inspection later. He mentioned her angelic side, and she smiled again a little, but this time her lips were more together, pursed. She brought her hand up, holding two fingers, like a peace sign, and waggled them. ' Just part. ' Dancing. That was just her, trapaizing around alone. She didn't know if anyone would ever want to spend time with her, or why. She was pretty sure, but first impressions didn't make you love someone. (Chalk up another string of doubt.) ' Still not entirely sure what the other part is. ' It was a lying truth; she was half gifted. But she, personally, always questioned it. The possibilities were endless!
The sky was growing a rosy red and purple on the outskirts, above their head. The edges of the horizon were a blood dash of gold and red, striking and beautiful like murdered money. 'Meant that it was getting late. This struck Dell as funny; she should have probably taken a notice of the time and the place so she was more prepared and aware for when she had to leave. She knew where the direction of camp was, she could feel were the forest ended, where the firs changed to grassy ground, and pine needles stopped sitting heavy on the ground, so she was far from lost. Something tugged at her, and she felt like playing with her personality. The human part of her made her realize the qualities of being angelic that angels tend to overlook; the parts that could be used for her own wants. So she smiled again, just a little smirk, and walked just a little closer to this Benji fellow. ' Hm, well, some might say I just like to keep them guessing, ' she answered in response to his query about why she was out here. She glowed bright from her mother's side, and light sort of fell around them. It wasn't too bright, just a comfortable glow like a camp fire. People, dancing with her? She ventured a few steps closer, so they were a just a small width away. ' and besides, no one's offered yet. ' She worked to stifle a giggle at this behavior that was so unlike her, but she felt like she just wanted to play a little bit. And this was a result of the one quality that most people seemed to overlook in her; if she had the opportunity, she tended to be a smidge manipulative. It didn't show up often, but how common was the chance.
The smirk was now full blown on her face as she turned away, long, angelic legs pushing her off back towards camp. Over her shoulder she called, ' Goodbye, Benji. ' And then continued walking.
that was fun. xD we could end it, or he could follow her. *shrug* i kind of just felt like they should have more meetings than this. x) (lyrics: lady gaga - monster)

i keep a sinister smile and a hole in my heart , so if you wanna get inside then you can get in line . the girl baffled him, the way she didn't look as pleased to see him as she had initially. he didn't like it. benji was used to girls seeing him, enjoying his charm and almost falling at his feet, or at least attempting to play hard to get and then falling at his feet. but her? something wasn't quite right, and it irritated benji. avoiding a frown, he let himself smirk gently, trying to hold off the scowl that would form on his forehead. she made him a bit nervous with how she was, the way she wasn't quite loving him as much as other people did. he didn't like it one bit, but he thought it would be best to keep to himself – he didn't need to make an enemy with an angel. he smirked as she waggled her fingers at him, his smirk growing into a grin. "well, you can certainly tell.. you've got that.. glow", he added sincerely. it was true, she really did have the glow about her that angels had, even though she was only partly. the light the surrounded her radiated to him, making him less miserable, and certainly less angsty. it was nice to be so alone, and nice to be brightened by this stranger, even if she made him uncomfortable. he arched an eyebrow, pushing his hands into his pockets as he stood in front of her, confused. how didn't she know? he didn't want to ask, because surely she'd have shown signs. "well, if you don't know, maybe it's just plain old human.. maybe you're a bit normal", he smiled, the word normal sounding anything but from benji's mouth. he wasn't normal, not even a little, and nor was anyone in his family – they were all a bit dysfunctional.
as she looked around, he did too, the gold and crimson skies forming around them as he smiled gently. he couldn't help but love a sunset. the colours merging into one another, the deeper purples blending through to the brightest yellow, the sun trying to hold onto what was left of the day. she shuffled closer, soon enough she was so close he could've felt her breath near him. he could smell her, the soft, sweet scent that seemed so natural to her. even if it wasn't, he liked it, and he wasn't about to shove her away for smelly nice, now was he? he smirked and shrugged, reaching out and gently pushing a piece of hair back behind her ear. "well, some would say you just like the danger of being torn apart..", he told her, glancing to his sides as the area around them was darkening. he wasn't a particularly cowardly person, but he was a nymph – he wasn't a badass vampire, or a scary werewolf, he was a prat who liked water.. what exactly was he meant to do to protect her if some big macho wolf comes along to kick ass? fuck all, that's what, he would have no chance. she moved closer yet again and benji now could feel her warmth near him, like he was sat a foot from a fire which was burning gently in front of him. it was pleasant, but odd. he'd never met an angel before, or even a pat one. "you've never asked", he retorted, his voice now a low, husky whisper to the girl who was barely a foot from his chest.
as she turned on her heel and left benji stood for a moment, his eyebrows twisted into a harsh scowl. what the fuck was her deal? he was confused, very confused. why was she flitting off now, when they were clearly mid conversation? he didn't know and quite frankly, he assumed she was stuck up – like he wasn't good enough, why else would she have just left? "charming, really", he shouted after the female, shrugging his shoulders mindlessly, pulling out another cigarette and lighting it. if she was going to sod off for no apparent reason, so was he, as he began walking back the way he came. "she was fucking weird", he mumbled to himself between drags, blowing the smoke out of the corner of his mouth casually as he ran a hand over his face. yeah, needless to say, he was baffled.
